Oni-gawara, demon (鬼) tiles (瓦), are decorative tiles put on buildings to ward off evil spirits and prevent them from haunting the building. This particular oni-gawara is on the Ankokunden, a Buddhist temple inside the Zojo-ji Temple complex.
